HOW DID
ICEBERG FORMED?
GENERAL STATEMENT
Have you ever watching Titanic film? The populer film have ever
in the word. One of the world's worst
disasters at sea was in 1912 when the liner "Titanic" collided
with an iceberg on her maiden voyage. The beginning of the disaster, when the captain
supposed that collided chunks just a little block but actually it is an
iceberg. That is almost come from the iceberg phenomenon, we just can see a
little side surface the water, whereas the hidden sight is bigger and imposing.
Icebergs look like huge frozen mountains, floating low in the water. They are
an impressive sight, but are dangerous things for a ship to encounter.
SEQUENCE EXPLANATION
An iceberg is an enormous piece of ice floating in the
sea. "Berg" is the German word for mountain. In the coldest
parts of the earth, around the North and South Poles, land and sea are both
covered by sheets of ice, over 300 metres deep at the centre. An iceberg is a
piece of glacial ice which has broken off and become free-floating. Although
icebergs are found in the ocean, they are actually made from freshwater, and
this contributes to their buoyancy in the ocean. Typically, around one tenth of an
iceberg's mass can be seen above the surface of the water, with the bulk of the
iceberg being submerged. This explains the common slang term “the tip of the
iceberg,” used to describe a situation in which incomplete information about a
situation is available.
Glaciers form on land as a
result of an accumulation of snow over thousands of years. Successive layers
compress earlier accumulations until, at depths below 60 to 70 metres, glacial
ice is formed. Glaciers “flow” or “creep” outward under their own weight like a
viscous fluid. When the edge of a glacier advances into the ocean, the pieces
that break off are what we call icebergs. When
an iceberg breaks off in a process known as calving, it sets sail on a slow
journey through the ocean. The iceberg will move with the ocean and wind
currents, and its lifespan will be essentially indefinite, as long as it is not
pushed into warmer regions. Many icebergs lose a bit of volume during the
summer months, but as long as they are close to the poles, they can remain
quite sizable. Over time, an iceberg may also break up into several smaller
segments.
To be classified as an iceberg,
the height of the ice must be greater than 16 feet (five meters) above sea
level and the thickness must be 98-164 feet (30-50 meters) and the ice must
cover an area of at least 5,382 square feet (500 square meters). There are smaller pieces of ice known as
“bergy bits” and “growlers.” Bergy bits and growlers can originate from
glaciers or shelf ice, and may also be the result of a large iceberg that has
broken up. A bergy bit is a medium to large fragment of ice. Its height is
generally greater than three feet (one meter) but less than 16 feet (five
meters) above sea level and its area is normally about 1,076-3,229 square feet
(100-300 square meters). Growlers are smaller fragments of ice and are roughly
the size of a truck or grand piano. They extend less than three feet (one
meter) above the sea surface and occupy an area of about 215 square feet (20
square meters).
CLOSING
Nowdays many scientists take a part to study an
iceberg. Climate scientists study icebergs as they break up for clues to the
processes that cause ice shelf collapse. Scientists have noticed that the way
icebergs break up when they reach warmer waters mirrors the disintegration of
Antarctic ice shelves. By studying the factors that cause icebergs to break up,
researchers hope to better understand the influences that lead to ice shelf
breakup, and to better predict how ice shelves will respond to a warming
climate. Oceanographers follow icebergs because the cold freshwater they
contribute to the sea can influence currents and ocean circulation far away
from their origins. Biologists study icebergs to find out how they influence
ocean life. As icebergs melt, they leak nutrients into the ocean around
them. Recent studies have shown that the water surrounding icebergs teems with
plankton, fish, and other sea life.
>>Meaning:
Pernah nonton film Titanic
kan?
luar seperti cairan lengket. Ketika tepi gletser menjangkau samudera, bagian
